Allocations Announced for Record-Level £25 Billion R&D Budget

NATIONAL NEWS

 , 15TH JUNE 2022

New allocations have now been published for the record £25.1 billion Research and Development budget settlement being distributed across UK Research & Innovation (UKRI)’s councils and major programmes.

UKRI’s Research & Development budget will reach over £8.8 billion in 2024-2025, its highest ever level, allowing for the delivery of an ambitious agenda through its 9 councils.

This includes:

  • a £16.8 billion investment over the 3-year period through core budgets for UKRI’s 7 Research Councils, Research England and Innovate UK
  • a £2 billion investment over the 3-year period for a new collective cross-council approach to talent initiatives
  • a £2.9 billion investment over the 3-year period in infrastructure projects

Science Minister George Freeman said:

As we look back at the last 2 years, it is hard to imagine a time when we have owed more to scientists, researchers and innovators.

I have never been prouder of the UK’s world-leading research base, which is why I am so pleased to have awarded £25.1 billion, the highest level of funding to date, to our national science and research agency, UK Research and Innovation. This significant investment will support our ambitions to made the UK a science superpower, delivering growth opportunities right across the country while helping the research community tackle the great scientific challenges of our time.

This significant investment will support the UK’s already world-leading research work being done across the country, delivering local economic impact via R&D funding, attracting and developing top research talent, and helping unlock private sector investment.

UKRI contribute significantly to the government’s Levelling Up agenda, having developed a new approach to growing promising enterprise clusters, and driving the adoption of innovation – from technology advisory services to boost local diffusion, to providing access to competitive grants, and supporting links for innovators to private finance and investors.

The settlement, providing record-level funding for UKRI, also represents significant progress towards achieving the UK’s target for R&D investment reaching 2.4% of GDP by 2027, these ambitious plans, combined with the government’s generous R&D tax programme, will give businesses the confidence to invest in the wake of the pandemic.

Further details on how UKRI’s £25.1 billion budget has been allocated are provided in UKRI’s explainer document (PDF).

Review: OL-CsPBr3

The paper reports a study on plasmon-assisted PL enhancement in CsPBr3 nanocrystals. Efforts were paid to the clarification of underlying

Physical mechanisms by using time-resolved PL measurements and femtosecond laser pump-probe methods. While the big picture seems

to be correct, more details and discussion are needed , these include:

  1. In CsPbBrs, both exciton and bi-exciton could be excited, however, in current paper only exciton has been considered. Can the authors please add literature and discuss about it, for example, DOI: 10.1021/acs.jpclett.8b03098
  2. Time evolution of PL over a longer time period is not shown and discussed. For example, what will happen for a measurement lasting for 400 seconds, has the authors done such measurement, how stable is the PL and did you see any blink? Please elaborate or discuss about it.
  3. In paragraph beneath Fig.3, it says ’To further quantiverly describe the PL dynamics, a bi-exponentioal function…..was exploited to fit…’, here, I wish to see in supplementary how such fitting was done, what is the A1 and A2 values. From there, can authors discuss about which mechanism is dominant, radiative or non-radiative, what is rough weighting between them?
  4. In Fig. 2(a), can you please mark the exciton-absorption peak position as mentioned in text?
  5. Typo: paragraph beneath Fig. 2, ‘Therefore, steady-stale PL’, should be steady-state

[Reminder] Zoom Meetings Basic plan 40-minute lift expiring on June 30, 2022

On July 1, 2022, the 40-minute time limit on group meetings will be reinstated on your Zoom Meetings Basic account.

Dear Valued Customers,

Our records indicate that you are using a free version of Zoom Meetings without the 40-minute group time limit for Basic accounts.

In support of primary and secondary (K-12) education during the pandemic, Zoom temporarily lifted the 40-minute time limit. As most students have returned to in-person instruction, this program will conclude on June 30, 2022.

What does that mean for you? Starting on July 1, 2022, your Zoom Meeting account will automatically revert to the Zoom Meetings Basic plan. Our Zoom Meeting Basic Plan now has a 40-minute time limit for any meetings hosted. Meet as often as you would like for up to 40 minutes per meeting.

Visit Zoom.us for additional information.

On behalf of Zoom, we want to thank you for your tremendous work in providing academic continuity and delivering – or receiving – education during these difficult times. We hope we were able to successfully assist you over these past two years.
