Led by Professor Zengbo (James) Wang, our team is dedicated to advancing next-generation photonics and laser technologies with wide-ranging applications in advanced manufacturing, super-resolution imaging, sensing, solar energy, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One key scientific achievement by us  is the pioneering of  &#8216;microsphere nanoscope&#8217; and super-resolution techniques and applications based on dielectric particle superlenses made from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/search?q=microsphere+nanoscope\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">microsphere<\/span><\/a> ,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/search?q=Spider+silk+superlens\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">spider silk<\/span><\/a> &nbsp;,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/search?q=nanoparticle+nanobead+superlens\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">high-index nanoparticle<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;and others.&nbsp;These were widely publicised.  Check our featured&nbsp;&nbsp;interview (&#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/analyticalscience.wiley.com\/do\/10.1002\/micro.2717\/full\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Improbable vision<\/em><\/span><\/a>&#8220;)&nbsp;&nbsp; and review chapter  (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">&#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/laserphotonics.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Chapter-15_2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Super-resolution imaging and microscopy by dielectric particle-lenses<\/em><\/a>&#8220;)&nbsp; <\/span>we wrote about the technique.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To address key challenges in microsphere nanoscopy\u2014such as low image contrast, slow acquisition speed, sample dependence, and ultra-short working distances\u2014we are leading innovations that aim to overcome these limitations. For more on this evolving field, see our published <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/ftp\/arxiv\/papers\/2108\/2108.09153.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">roadmap<\/a><\/span> and  <span style=\"font-size: revert; text-decoration-line: underline;\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/lpor.202200029\" target=\"_blank\">Roadmap on Label-Free Super-resolution Imaging<\/a><\/span><span style=\"background-color: rgba(68, 68, 68, 0.2); font-size: revert;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond super-resolution, we are also active in nanophotonics and metamaterials (e.g., anti-laser filters), laser material processing (e.g., artificial surface engineering and nano-marking), and solar energy technologies, with a strong emphasis on industrial applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Artificial Intelligence in Photonics Design, Imaging, and Manufacturing<br><\/strong>Our recent research places strong emphasis on integrating AI into photonics and laser engineering. Supported by a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship, we are developing AI-driven super-resolution imaging technologies and exploring how AI can enhance optical design, nanoscale imaging, and laser fabrication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We apply a range of models\u2014such as CNNs, RNNs, GANs, and Large Language Models (LLMs)\u2014to tackle challenges in photonic inverse design, biological imaging, and laser process control.
